Spring/Summer 2011 – THE VIRGIN SUICIDES

18 Jan

The Virgin Suicides

Patti Smith is transported back to Victorian times, the white button up blouses and white lacy underclothes remain, but are worn with brothel creepers, a black felt hat, flowing hair and a lot of attitude. Clothing references those that you wore as a child, feminine dresses, corduroy shorts, pinafores and sailor jackets, sweet and innocent, but now thrown into the post-punk age. Innocent clothes are given a Lolita look. This story looks to our favourite films; Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Virgin Suicides, mixed with some contemporary New Zealand designers for inspiration, with their haunted looks; sweet yet tortured. White is the key colour but drops of colour and the odd micro floral finds its way in. Daisy chain motifs and black and white photographic prints add a graphic edge. High necked dresses recreated in sheers have a subversive appeal. Lace, broidery anglais and cutwork are central to this look. Key items include camisoles, broidery under dresses, peter pan blouses, sailor girl jackets, bloomers, bed shorts, Victoriana blouses and lace sheaths

SPRING/SUMMER 2011 – DIRTY PRETTY THINGS

18 Jan
Dirty Pretty Things
(festival look)
Nineties grunge, a bohemian spirit and post wood-stock rock chic looks are fused together creating a new urban bohemian look. Free-spirited gyspy dresses and voluminous peasant blouses in watercolour prints are worn under studded jean jackets and fringed bikers with doctor martins and ripped tights. Maxi lengths are long and flowing, hems are gradated and frayed. Traditional floaty looks are given a hard edge and a grunge twist with traditionally pretty floral fabrics studded and dip dyed. Prints bleed into one another to shadowy, vapourous effect. This is a haunted beauty, a dark fairytale vision of femininity with an injection of street cred. Stevie Nicks ethereal, otherworldly look inspires this trend. Key details include fringing, macrame, crochet, sheers, shredding and distressing. Key items include peasant dresses, cobweb knits, sheer maxi skirts, distressed dirty denim, the studded biker, shredded denim hot pants, hippy tees and silk slips. Colours are muted and underexposed, taking reference from re-coloured vintage photographs and galaxy imagery. Mauve, grey, forest green, taupe and off-white are key.

Spring/Summer 2011 – HERE COMES THE SUN!

Here Comes the Sun! – March 2011
Bright Young Things Simple and bold are key summer statements – minimalist clothing in upbeat brights. A wardrobe of mix-and-match separates that are easy wear and easy to co-ordinate. Summer spells fun and optimism and clothing reflects this with bold deckchair stripes, fruit salad block prints, neon brights and the return of white. Simple t-shirts are re-invented in sheer fabrics, tunics are colour blocked and lace is dyed in luminous brights. Pineapples, bananas and citrus fruit prints give a tropical mood, think Josephine Baker meets Katy Perry. Sheers are key, to create layers and new colour plays. Tunics, tube skirts, shirt dresses and cropped trousers signal a return to simple shapes, a blank canvas for print and colour. It’s about being bold and statement dressing: stripes are worn top to toe, one-colour dressing return, shades of red and yellow are styled together create a wearable sunset. The colours of the season are steaming hot: highlighter pink, fanta orange, primrose yellow and poppy red.
> Go Tropo! / Favela Chic/ Carnival / If the bold minimalism gets a little too serious a tropical 50s pinup mood can be injected as a micro story – think tie front polka dot boob tubes, bustier dresses, high waisted hot pants all worn with a colourful head scarf to the sound of some surf rock! Go wild with toucans, pineapples, banana palms and Hawaiian prints. Take inspiration form Katy Perry and Lily Allen.
